Friday March 5, 2010

Youth Soccer Organization Underway

Planning for the 2010 Clintonville Youth Soccer League season has now begun with the first order of business organizing the volunteer board that runs the league in conjunction with the Park and Recreation Department.  The Youth Soccer Board is responsible for a wide variety of duties, and  each and every member of the board takes on one or more specific duties.  The boards meets from now through the end of the fall soccer season, though there is no set schedule.  Any area person interested in serving on the board is asked to contact Dick Writt at the Park and Recreation Department office at 823-7660.  Drew Lundt, Amie Kendl, Laurie Vollrath and Dick Writt are returning to the board for the 2010 season.

Signups for the 2010 season will be accepted beginning Monday March 15th at City Hall.  The board has also set up two special signup sessions.  They are: Friday April 23rd 3:30-7:00 pm and Saturday April 24th 9 am - 12 Noon.  Both sessions will be held at the Clintonville Community Center, 30 S. Main St.

Area youth age 5-14 as of September 1, 2010 are eligible to take part in the league.  Important dates related to the 2010 season are as follows:

Monday March 15  - start of signup - accepted at City Hall

Saturday April 24, 9-Noon - special signup session - Community Center
Friday June 18, 4:30 pm - initial signup deadline - without penalty
Friday June 25, 4:30 pm - second signup deadline - with $10 penalty after 6/18
Monday August 16, 6:30 pm (tentative) - coaches meeting, Community Center
Monday August 23, (tentative ) - team practice starts this week
Saturday September 11 - (tentative) league play begins
Saturday October 23 - (tentative) end of season "tournament"

Coach recruitment is also beginning.  Each year a number of new coaches are needed.  Anyone interested in coaching is also asked to contact the department office at 823-7660.  The youth soccer season is just 10 weeks long, broken down into 3 practice weeks, six regular season Saturday game days, and finally a season ending tournament on a Saturday.
New coaches can be paired with a returning coach  for assistance.  Also, a number of training aids are available, plus one or more training sessions will be held.
Officials are also needed for the league.  Officials are paid.  Anyone interested in helping out with this should also contact the department.  The league is able to be flexible in scheduling officials to work as their schedule allows.

Easter Egg Hunt Help Still Needed

Organizers of the city's Easter Egg Hunt, scheduled for Saturday April 3rd at Bucholtz Park are still in need of assistance to put the event on this year.   Once again the Park and Recreation Department is organizing the event.
In past years as many as 500-600 area youth have taken part in the event, although in recent years the numbers have been more in the 200-300 range, with 275 taking part in 2009.
The department is still seeking monetary donations to purchase prizes, items to be used as prizes, plastic bags to put the prizes in, as well as volunteers to help with various aspects of the event.  Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in helping out are asked to contact Dick Writt at the Park and Recreation Department 823-7660.

On Saturday April 3rd, two hunt times have been set up - 10 am for those youth 5 and under and 10:30 for youth 6-10 years of age.  1000 plastic eggs will be hidden in the park.  Each egg when found and turned in will entitle the youth to a special prize.  The number of eggs that each child can find and turn in will be limited.  Any child not finding at least one egg (which is highly unlikely) will still receive a prize.

The Easter Bunny will be making a special appearance at the Easter Egg Hunt once again this year, and it is hoped that several other friends of the Easter Bunny will be present as well.

 Men's Basketball League Results - March 3rd

Brei's Hillside Farms maintained their first place position in the league with a hard fought overtime victory over Steinke Auto 71-69.  Tied at 59 at the end of regulation, the overtime period was pretty much even as well, with Brei's able to eke out the 2 point victory.  Matt Brunner led Brei's with 19 points, including five 3 point field goals.  Curt Brei chipped in with 17.  Tom Colla's 16 points led the eight Steinke Auto players who scored.
The Jeff Schultz team played a tight game in the first half against the Ryan Smith team and was down just 3 at halftime 32-29.  However, the second half was a totally different story as the Smith team blitzed Schultz to post a 64-47 victory.  Three Smith players scored 11 points to lead the way, Zach Schroeder, Riley Knapp and Dustin Krueger.  David Carlsen with 13 point led Schultz's.
