The
Clintonville community is once again celebrating its annual winter
festival aptly named "Winter Whirl" Friday - Sunday
January 29-31. Over the three days of the festival 18 different
events are scheduled to be held, offering something for all ages and
interests.
The festival kicks off on Friday with a used book sale by
the Friends of the Library at the Public Library 10 am - 5 pm. Due
to the large number of books they have available, they have also added
hours on Thursday Jan. 28th from 6-8 pm.
The family bowling and pizza activity Friday night at Clintonville
Lanes returns this year. From 6:00-8:00 pm a group of four
receives two hours of bowling plus a homemade pizza and a pitcher of soda
for $25. Additional persons can be added to any group for $5 each,
but does not include additional pizza or soda. Bumper bowling is
available. Reservations and payments can be made at City Hall. 50

The signature event of Winter Whirl, the Tummy Warmer Chili and Chicken
Soup Cook-off, sponsored by the Park and Recreation Department,
is set for Saturday 10 am-1 pm at the Clintonville Recreation
Center, 55 E. 12th St. This is the 21st consecutive year
for this event. In past years anywhere from 15 to 30 or more
local and area chefs have competed to be named top chef in hot
chili, mild chili and chicken soup divisions. Judging will take
place at 11 am. The public can sample as few or as many of the
entries as they desire for a small fee. Persons interested in
entering the contest can call the Park and Recreation Department at
823-7660.
Other activities planned at the Clintonville Recreation Center on Saturday
include an ice cream sundae booth, sponsored by the Woodland
Badgers 4H Club, a dessert and beverage booth, sponsored by the
Tres Rios 4H Club and inflatable fun for kids, sponsored by the
Park and Recreation Department. Two large inflatable units will be
set up for kids age 3-12 to play in/on/with from 2-5 pm in the gym at the
Rec Center. There will be no charge although a free will offering
will be requested. Several crafters and vendors will also
have booths set up selling their wares.
Other
events taking place in the community on Saturday include: another
edition of the Friends of the Library used book sale at the Public
Library from 10 am -12:30 pm, professional chain saw carving by
Dave Bartels at the shopping center parking lot 10 am - 4 pm,
the Clintonville Play and Learn Pre-School's Pre-School Fun Day, 2010
theme "Under the Sea," 9-11 am for youth age 2-5 at
the United Methodist Church (fee of $7-call 823-6328 to
pre-register but walk-ins welcome), snowmobile drags on the Clintonville
Pond across from Mathew's Supper Club, sponsored by the Restless
Riders Horse Club, with registration 8-10:30 am with racing starting at 11
am, featuring a heated tent offering food and refreshments (call Charlie
at 823-6933 with questions), a homemade pie and ice cream social,
sponsored by the Clintonville Senior Center at the Community Center,
along with several crafters and vendors also at the Community
Center. Also outside of the Community Center will be a Hot
Barbecue Lunch, with hot turkey and hot beef sandwiches, hot cocoa,
soda and water, 10 am - 3 pm. (weather permitting) The third annual Fire on Ice fishing derby on Pigeon
Pond adjacent to Pickerel Point, sponsored by the Clintonville
Fireman's Association, featuring prizes for both youth and adults for
various fish species, a food and beverage tent and drawings for a variety
of prizes. The free community open house at the Clintonville
High School Rec Center has moved from Sunday to Saturday this
year 8 am-4 pm, with the entire facility available for use at no charge
for anyone. This event is sponsored by the CHS Rec Center. Saturday
ends with the Chamber of Commerce's 6th Annual Brew-Ha beer tasting
event at Clintonville Lanes from 5-9 pm. Participants
will be able to taste 30 or more micro brews, enjoy food from The Brick
Oven and Pingel's Fenceline Meats, LLC vendors, take their chances on
some wonderful door prizes and raffles, Shave Your Own Cheese
sponsored by DuPont Cheese and all in all have a great time.
Advance tickets for $25 are available from the Chamber of Commerce,
Clintonville Lanes and at B&H Fashionwear and B&H
Footwear. At the door tickets will be $30 and non-alcoholic
tickets are $10 each. (photo I.D. required)
Sunday kicks off with the Knights of Columbus famous "all
you eat" porkie, pancake and scrambled egg breakfast at the Community
Center from 7:30-11 am. The afternoon includes ice skating
races for all ages, sponsored by the Park and Recreation Department at
the ice skating rink in WA Olen Park starting at 2 pm. There
will be no charge to take part and hot chocolate and cookies will
be available for all to enjoy, skaters as well as spectators.
A new event in the Winter Whirl lineup for 2010 is the Children's
Carnival 1-3 pm Sunday at St. Rose/St. Mary School, 140
Auto Street, featuring games, prizes, food, drinks and a raffle.
Tickets are 50 cents each or 3 for $1, with the raffle drawing at 2:55 pm.
On Saturday and Sunday at the Clintonville Recreation Center and the
Clintonville Community Center tickets will be sold at the various
events for an art print raffle - "December Dawn
Cardinal" by Rosemary Millette and "Lights of Home"
by Terry Redlin. The drawing will take place 11 am at the Community
Center on Sunday.
